It has 8 monuments that have been declared “World Heritage” by Unesco, for the mastery of artistic mosaic. Here are the most beautiful for Wine and Travel Italy!

Basilica di San Vitale

Introducing Ravenna through art and mosaics - san vitale

When you enter the Basilica di San Vitale, your attention is immediately drawn towards the high spaces and the frescoes of the dome. A lesser-known gem is the maze, a symbol of sin. According to tradition, finding the path to the exit represents an act of purification.

Battistero Neoniano

Introducing Ravenna through art and mosaics - battistero neoniano

In the Neonian Baptistery (Battistero Neoniano), you will be immediately struck by the great mosaic of concentric circles on the ceiling. In the second circle, the twelve apostles are depicted on a blue background, dressed alternately in white and gold robes. In the central circle, on a gold background, is the scene of Jesus’ baptism.

Sant’Apollinare Nuovo

Introducing Ravenna through art and mosaics - sant apollinare nuovo

The mosaics of the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo completely cover the walls of the nave. On the left side are represented twenty-two Holy virgins, in a procession following the Three Kings. The young girls are richly dressed in clothes woven in gold and precious stones.

Battistero degli Ariani

Introducing Ravenna through art and mosaics - battistero ariani

Inside the Baptistery of the Arians (Battistero degli Ariani), the only decorated part is the dome, which is covered with mosaics. These represent the procession of the twelve apostles and the baptism of Christ, just as in the Battistero Neoniano, from which it is inspired.
