Pera dell’Emilia Romagna IGP is a fresh pear deriving from the following varieties: Abate Fetel, Conference, Decana del Comizio, Kaiser, Max Red Bartlett, Cascade, Passa Crassana, William, Santa Maria and Carmen. Each variety of pear has it’s own unique characteristics and vary in size, flavour and colour which allows them to be paired with several different dishes and have multiple uses. The production area of Pera dell’Emilia Romagna is within the several municipalities in the provinces of Reggio Emilia, Ferrara, Modena, Ravenna and Bologna, in the Emilia Romagna region.
The pear has always been well-known and appreciated in the Emilia-Romagna region that it was first depicted in a fresco from around 1450: the Madonna della Pera. The pears should be eaten right away while they’re still fresh and are best when used in dishes with fish, risotto, pasta or meat dishes like pork fillet.
