Funghetti di Offida

Funghetti di Offida is a typical dessert native to the city of Offida, a hillside village near Ancona in the eastern Italian region of Marche.

Presentation

Funghetti di Offida are made with simple ingredients specifically water, sugar, flour and anise. The name literally translates to; “mushrooms of Offida”, it was given that name because the cookies resemble tiny white mushrooms.

The legend of the cookie states that they they were first made during a siege in the fourteenth century. At the time, the women of Offida had nothing to cook for the soldiers, so they had to quickly make a recipe by mixing the only ingredients available: honey (then replaced with sugar), flour and water (the anise was added later), and thus, the Funghetti di Offida were created!
