Venice: “Most Serene” Charmer

After visiting it for the first time, you will always want to return. Venice has the charm and authenticity of a water city, magnetic and forthright. The water that has brought merchants and innovations for centuries, that has made it world-famous for being a multicultural and avant-garde crossroads, is the element that reflects it in every way. Venice, like its water, changes face and shape depending on how you look at it.

It is not easy to pick out its most significant monuments; St. Mark’s Square alone, with its Basilica, is a jumble of wonders. A visit to the Doge’s Palace is a journey through time to discover the historical treasures of the Serenissima. And then the Rialto Bridge, the Guggheneim, the Teatro la Fenice, and the Acqua Alta Bookstore.

But Venice is also food, a culinary tradition that has taken the best from all the peoples who have passed through it. La Serenissima is the capital of the aperitivo, which is consumed in the typical bacari between a Spritz, strictly made with Prosecco DOC, Select and a green olive to top it all off, and a cicchetto. Try those at Osteria Bancogiro, including the delicious and typical baccalà mantecato and traditional meatballs. Cantina Do Spade offers traditional cicchetti and a careful selection of wines, including Prosecco DOC, the city’s official bubbly. This wine fits perfectly with a dish of sarde in saor, a guazzetto of mussels or the typical bigoli in salsa, a typical format of long pasta accompanied by a sauce made with anchovies and white onion from Chioggia.

Restaurant Zanze XVI offers creative cuisine while respecting tradition. Nothing is left to chance, and local ingredients are revisited in light of cooking techniques and preparations from even faraway countries. Lovers of contemporary cuisine must try the star-studded Glam sign, which bears the signature of chef Enrico Bartolini. The two tasting menus, “Arte, orti e laguna,” with a series of dishes that pay homage to Venice and all its gastronomic richness, and “I Classici del Glam,” with iconic dishes from the chef’s career, are a true sensory journey.

Historic residences, alberghi diffusi, Habsburg palaces and former convents. When it comes to overnight accommodations Venice offers an endless array of possibilities all to be discovered. Locanda Casa dei Querini is a 16th-century palazzo five minutes from St. Mark’s Square. A b&b with a relaxed atmosphere whose 6 rooms, overlooking the picturesque Campo San Giovanni Novo, have the charm of pure Venetian-style furnishings. Villa Laguna, on Lido Island, on the other hand, is a hotel overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Romantic and perfect for a more secluded experience. For a more adventurous and less luxurious trip, the Foresteria Levi is a great option.

La Serenissima, moreover, is beautiful all year round. In winter, Carnival colors its streets with masks and traditions, spring arrives with the opening of the Venice Biennale, and summer is the best time to enjoy concerts and nighttime openings of churches and museums. Autumn is the season of the Historical Regata, one of the most spectacular and engaging moments in city life, and the Film Festival, among the most important internationally. At Christmas, then, the city lights up wearing its wonderful illuminations, and every one of these occasions is good to toast with a glass of Prosecco DOC.

In short, walking among the canals and looking at the facades of its palaces, getting lost in its gardens and hidden alleys, it will not be difficult to understand why Venice often occupies the top positions when it comes to decreeing which is the most beautiful city in the world.
