Buglioni

Buglioni is a Veronese domain immersed in the vineyards of the Valpolicella Classica and born from the courage and foresight of Alfredo and Mariano Buglioni who, having abandoned fashion almost 30 years ago, chose to devote themselves to winemaking, with the aim of becoming one of the reference winemakers in Valpolicella.

In 1993 Alfredo Buglioni bought an old farmhouse in the heart of Valpolicella Classica. It was included in the property, a vineyard of 3.5 hectares was found, cultivated with the local red varieties Corvina, Corvinone, Molinara and Rondinella. Alfredo and his son Mariano didn’t know what to do with that year’s harvest. They then approached reputable growers and offered their harvest, free of charge. For seven years they continued to give their grapes.

With the 2000 vintage, they embarked on their first serious efforts in winemaking. Having built the cellar under the house, to express their style in an original way, they decided to focus on a young, freshly graduated oenologist, Diego Bertoni, who is still the guide of the cellar. This strong passion leads Alfredo and Mariano Buglioni to produce distinctive and elegant wines both with native Valpolicella grapes and with other more unusual and almost forgotten ones that enhance the authentic character of the territory.

The territory

To the 50 hectares of Valpolicella Classica, alongside the traditional Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara over the years, Oseleta, Croatina, Garganega and Incrocio Manzoni have been added. The plants closest to the winery, in Corrubbio di Negarine, use the traditional double pergola system, while the vineyards in the municipalities of Sant’Ambrogio and San Pietro in Cariano are formed according to the Guyot system, with a higher density high per hectare. Indeed, a lower yield is accepted in search of better quality.

The characteristics of the soil – light, alluvial brown and rich in skeleton -, the careful techniques of pruning and control in the vineyard, allow to obtain grapes of the highest quality. In Lugana, Buglioni then bought 5 cultivated hectares in Trebbiano di Lugana. The harvest is done only with manual picking of the grapes and selection of the best bunches.

Buglioni produces also an organic EVO oil, produced with the olive groves of Grignano, Favarol and Leccino.

The craftsmanship in the winemaking processes, also through the use of technologically advanced systems, constantly seeks balance in wines with a strong personality, a true expression of the terroir to which they belong.

The construction (almost completed) of a new technologically advanced cellar will allow to increase the quality of the wine, guaranteeing a high respect for the grapes through new fermentation and aging processes such as amphorae or concrete tanks.

It is the ideal starting point for excursions on horseback, trekking or e-bike outings to discover the area, but also the place to take refuge away from the stress of the city. The building, a restored mid-19th century farmhouse, has retained many of the original architectural elements, such as stone and brick walls and old fireplaces, resulting in a warm and comfortable refuge.

In the evening, with a 5-minute walk among the vineyards, you can reach Locanda Buglioni to dine immersed in the most authentic Valpolicella, to be found also at the table. Every morning the breakfast buffet with homemade products, typical of the area, gives a good morning under the pergola or in the intimate room. And at the end of the holiday, it is a must to take home some good Buglioni bottles, a souvenir of the experience.
