Grape variety: Nero d’Avola
Cerasuolo di Vittoria is the only Italian DOCG wine from Sicily. It produces only red wine, made from at least 50 percent Nero d’Avola and a minimum of 30 percent Frappato, This appellation is located in Ragusa, on the south coast of the island of Sicily not far from the southeastern tip. It is colocated with the Vittoria DOC, which produces a similar red wine with varietals of Nero d’Avola, Frappato, and white Ansonica (also known as Inzolia).
The Cerasuolo wines (or Cerasa in Sicilian) a term meaning “cherry,” are typically ruby red in color with aromas of cherry, red berries, plum, and pomegranate. Frappato is typically fresh and fruity, while blends that rely more heavily on Nero d’Avola are more full-bodied and rich. This wine goes wonderfully with Sicilian arancini or risotto.
