Red grape variety: Nebbiolo
Vatellina Superiore DOCG is a wine zone located in various villages in the province of Sondrio, Lombardia. Wines produced here from red Nebbiolo grapes are dark crimson-colored with aromas of rose water, cherry and tar. The “Superiore” title is granted only to the very finest of light-bodied Valtellina wines once they have aged for at least 24 months.
In addition to Grumello, four other villages produce Vatellina Superiore DOCG wines including Inferno, Maroggia, Valgella and Sassella, where the vines benefit from additional light and warmth on the mountains.
These wines pair particularly well with traditional Vatellina foods such as Pizzoccheri, Taragna (cornmeal), Bresaola (salami) and Bitto cheese.
