Dolcetto d’Alba is one of seven Dolcetto-focused DOC wines produced in Italy’s north-western Piedmont region. The wine is considered the most notable of the Dolcetto classified reds, thanks to the considerable number of quality producers in the vicinity.
This almost ancestral bond has roots in Dolcetto wine and the people who populate “its” hills. According to some scholars, Langhe is a term that derives from “Langues,” which are nothing more than tongues of land that extend in a lively game of profiles, modulated by the changing of the seasons.
The DOC Dolcetto d’Alba wine obtained the recognition of the Controlled Designation of Origin on 6 July 1974.
The production area of the Dolcetto d’Alba DOC appellation extends over 35 municipalities around Alba. The vineyard hills of southern Piedmont, located to the right of the Tanaro river, have for centuries welcomed the Dolcetto vine, which had its origin on the same slopes.
Dolcetto finds its ideal habitat in the Langa soils: in fact, the clayey marls give a fresh and elegant wine. Its cultivation can be divided into two main bands: the Barolo and Barbaresco territories, where more structured wines are obtained; the other part is from Alba to climb towards the Belbo Valley where the geological structure originates finer lighter sweets.
The vines included in the composition of Dolcetto d’Alba DOC wine are 100% Dolcetto.
Dolcetto is a black Italian wine grape variety widely grown in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. The Italian word dolcetto means “little sweet one”, but it is not certain that the name originally carried any reference to the grape’s sugar levels: it is possible that it derives from the name of the hills where the vine is cultivated. In any case the wines produced are nearly always dry.
Dolcetto d’Alba DOC is an “everyday” wine that leads it to be rightly considered the friendship wine, with a simple and rustic character with a more or less intense ruby red colour related to the type of soil and deep, very marked purple reflections.
Its scent is vinous and fragrant with inviting hints of fruit in which cherry and plum are recognizable; the flavour is decidedly dry and dry, with modest acidity, slightly bitter, delicate and inviting.
The olfactory profile of Dolcetto d’Alba DOC wine is fruity, characteristic and dry and harmonious on the palate.
The wine pairs well with roasted white meats and raw meat salads.
