Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC is a red or rosé sparkling wine appellation that was awarded its DOC classification in 1970. It is situated north of Modena near the village of Sorbara in northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. The Sorbara is regarded as the highest-quality Lambrusco wine, mainly due to its more concentrated taste. It has some similarities to Lambrusco Salamino but produces a darker and more full-bodied wine.
The wines come in frizzante and spumante forms, and in various levels of sweetness. They feature a specific clone of the Lambrusco red wine grape variety, named after the village. The wines may undergo second fermentation either in bottle or in pressurized tanks.
The Lambrusco di Sorbara grapes’s most distinctive feature is its flowering anomaly. The vine drops its flowers, reducing yields. This results in the grapes having more concentrated flavors, so what it lacks in quantity is easily made up in quality. Its vines are often planted with those of Lambrusco Salamino. This aids fertilization on sandy alluvial soils.
The wine is grown in an area north of Modena, including the village of Sorbara.
Modena is home to over 8,000 hectares of vineyards, the oldest winery in the Emilia-Romagna region and the the oldest winegrowers association in Italy (which recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary).
Each year the Lambrusco DOCs in Modena produce approximately 31 million wine bottles, when considering the DOCs of Reggio Emilia and the addition Emilia Romagna IGTs, Lambrusco bottles would exceed 170 million bottle per year, making it the most produced wine in Emilia Romagna!
The wine is made of Lambrusco di Sorbara grapes (60-100%) and Lambrusco Salamino grapes (0-40%).
Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC is the lightest in colour of the Lambrusco wines, offering an evanescent sparkle and distinctive bouquet reminiscent of violets.
Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC is also the most acidic of Lambrusco wine, making it exceptionally good with fatty or grilled foods, Parmigiano Reggiano DOP cheese and lasagna.
