Passionate woman and wine producer 2/2: interview with Maria Paola Marini

As a woman wine producer, Maria Paola Marini give us her point of view. In Calabria, since 2003, the Marini family has been working its vineyards respecting the tradition of the territory. The choices made over the years have been to combine a modernization of the production plant, a great environmental sensitivity, immediately embracing organic farming and working with a view to sustainability.

How did you grow in the farm ? What was your experience in the wine sector ?

Ours is a family business, and my brother and I at some point decided to embark on this adventure in the wine field. The Cosenza environment was in great turmoil and this gave me courage and encouraged me to learn from all the experiences I could do. The world of wine was and is very open and dynamic and my insertion was natural. I found a lot of support from those who started before me and from my other colleagues and this allowed us to carry out our goals.

Did you feel part of the wine industry ? Did you feel welcomed ?

Absolutely yes. Although I started later than other colleagues, the group is small but very close-knit. As an entrepreneur being able to join this group, breathing a proactive and stimulating environment, also led me to learn from the experiences of others and allowed me to skip some steps or not make some mistakes thanks to the help of my colleagues.

Is there a wine that has remained in your heart ?

The wine to which I feel most attached is the Elaphe D.O.P. Terre di Cosenza. It is a wine composed of a blend of Magliocco and Aglianico. Magliocco is the native Calabrian grape variety, our maximum expression that characterizes us very much as a territory and as a taste. It is in this blend with Aglianico that it is not a properly native vine of Calabria but, being my company in the north of the province of Cosenza, I am very close to Basilicata; So, I find that this is a wine that reflects me a lot. I like to combine it with meats, especially roasts and stews. Excellent with textured cheeses.

What advice would you give to a young woman entering the industry ?

To not be afraid and dare. Ours is a world where we can make a difference, especially in the marketing sector where we have to tell our story and the world behind every bottle. It takes tenacity, perseverance and study but the results are not long in coming.
