Situated on the left bank of the Amendola stream, perched on a rocky structure in the eastern Aspromonte, Bova has been inhabited since the 6th century BC as part of Magna Graecia. Today, it’s an important agricultural municipality, especially known for olives, wine, and fruit, which are often processed locally. In a completely different geographical setting lies Bova Marina, situated along the coast, practically at the point where the Sideroni and Vena streams converge with the sea.
Before the IGT “Palizzi,” no quality recognition had been attributed to this area in the viticulture sector. It is one of the most renowned red wines in Calabria. The grapes are harvested in the second decade of September. After being crushed, the grapes ferment in steel tanks for 48/60 hours, then they are pressed, and the must is placed in temperature-controlled steel tanks, where it remains until the first racking in November. Two more rackings follow, and after about two months in chestnut wood barrels, it is bottled around 18 months after the harvest for an additional three months of refinement before being sold. Its alcohol content is 14°. It is considered an area of excellence for wine production in the entire Calabria region.
From the Palizzi IGT denomination and made from the Nerello Calabrese grape variety, Ambèli is one of the most emblematic wines you can taste in Bova Marina.
From the Palizzi IGT denomination and made from the Nerello Calabrese grape variety, Ambèli is one of the most emblematic wines you can taste in Bova Marina. It is a wine with an intense ruby red color, bright, lively, with violet reflections. The aroma is complex with notes of dried plum, cherry, blackberry, currant, and raspberry. It is a warm, robust, and balanced wine with abundant yet soft tannins that gain complexity and purity through bottle aging. It pairs well with red meats, white meat roasts, sweet and sour rabbit, and moderately aged cheeses.
Last but not least is Sceró, also from the Palizzi IGT denomination, with the best selections of Nerello Calabrese cultivated on the hills of Bova. This wine has an intense ruby color, with an ethereal, pleasant, and spicy aroma. The taste is dry, full, robust yet velvety.
