The Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG is produced in Torgiano, Perugia.
Torgiano is a castrum that owes its rebuilding on Roman ruins to its strategic position and the guarantee of supply of the Perugian markets, offered by the fertility of the plains and the wine and olive growing vocation of the hills. The flatlands are excellent for cereals, vegetables, fruit, textile fibre plants. The rich silt deposits, the fresh earth for the clay, the average altitude of 300 – 400 m above sea level, the sunny exposure of the ridge that connects Torgiano to Brufa – the medieval Castel Grifone, a contemporary castle of Poggio – make the hilly area the ideal environment for the cultivation of vines and olive trees.
After long centuries of alternating historical events, with the affirmation of the new world of viticulture, Torgiano aligned itself with the most famous Italian wine-growing areas, receiving first in Umbria, the recognition of the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC) on October 27, 1978. It became DOCG on October 20, 1990.
The Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG wine must be subjected to an ageing period of at least three years, of which at least 6 months are in the bottle.
The production area of Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG includes the entire territory of the municipality of Torgiano in the province of Perugia.
The designation of origin Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG is reserved for wines produced with:
The Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG wine has a normal acidity, excellent structure, an intense ruby red colour, while the scent is of a delicate fruity and floral bouquet.
