Colli Albani is a DOC of the Lazio wine region of central western Italy, located in the hills just south of Rome, dotted around the western side of Lake Albano, an extinct volcanic crater lake.
Created in August 1970, the title exclusively covers white wines in still or spumante form, at a range of sweetness levels. Colli Albani DOC refers to 4 types of white wine:
The geographical area of the Colli Albani DOC appellation falls in the central part of the Lazio region, in the province of Rome: it covers about 7,900 hectares and includes the steep part and the slopes of the western slope of the Alban Hills.
All wines are made within the same blend restrictions.
Malvasia di Candia (locally Malvasia Rossa) may account for up to 60 percent. Trebbiano (di Soave, Giallo or Toscano) must supply 25 to 50 percent, and Malvasia di Lazio (Malvasia Puntinata) between 5 and 45 percent.
Other varieties authorized in Lazio may make up no more than 10 percent.
Specifically, the individual types of wine are characterized as follows:
On the palate, dry or sparkling, all wines have normal acidity, a barely perceptible bitterness, little astringency, good structure, which contribute to their gustatory balance.
These wines pair well with appetizers, white meat and fish.
