Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC is Marche’s most famous white wine. The wine is well known to many Italian travelers thanks to the amphora-shaped bottle, which, however, should be avoided.
The word “castelli” means in castle in Italian, which is a reference to the ancient governance system of the municipalities in this area, which dates back to the Middle Ages.
The wines of this DOC include:
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC, is grown in a vast area stretching from the west-facing hills West of Ancona, the long Esimo river past Jesi Arcevia, down to the Musone river. The zone extends South to Matelica. This area features many medieval fortified villages – the castelli of the DOC title.
The terroir here is ideal for the production of mineral-tinged dry white wines, thanks mostly to its calcareous, clay and limestone-rich soils and a relatively dry maritime climate.
The main grape of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC is Verdicchio (min 85%), a historic grape which first arrived in the Marche region from Veneto in the north, with the permitted addition of up to 15% Trebbiano Toscana or Malvasia.
Verdicchio is an early budding grape variety, and takes its name from the Italian word “verde” which means green as it very rarely turns yellow as it matures.
These wines are acidic and have notes of citrus, which pairs well with antipasti, fish dishes and any pasta with a white sauce.
Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC is also known for its great aging potential and for being the perfect accompaniment to any typical Adriatic fish dish.
